At this point in time I dont really remember form where I heard about this movie, but since it was made by Hideaki Anno, someone whos previous works Ive loved, referring to Evangelion in this case, I decided to put the movie in my plan-to-watch list and eventually I sat down and watched the movie.
The movie is described as a 'drama', and while that isn't false, in my opinion romance also plays a central theme in the movie, but rather than the traditional romance approach, it gives more of a perspective on love through the lense of romance. If you've seen Evangelion, many of the themes and the way they are explored here will remind you of it, it is definitely a very Anno movie.
The visuals in the movie are amazing, has some absolutely beautiful shots, but aside from the cinematography, the general art direction is also super cool. Much of the visuals in the movie are super bizzare and absurd yet this bizareness is oftentimes either fully dismissed or acknowledged in a much more downplayed way, this dynamic between the absurd visuals yet grounded narrative works phenomenally in giving you some really cool eye candy as well as playing into the story being told in the movie.
Overall, it was a great watch, the whole movie continued to subvert my expectations all throughout, never becoming predictable yet not becoming confusing either. The way the whole production was handled made it a really fun and refreshing watch, it's always a pleasure to watch a genuine piece of art, thank you Anno.
